When a device is connected to a network, the MAC address is used to identify the device and to determine which traffic should be sent to it. The MAC address is hard-coded into the network interface and cannot be changed. MAC addresses are assigned by the manufacturer, and they are stored in the device’s firmware. The first 6 digits represent the manufacturer’s identifier, and the last 6 digits represent the device’s serial number. Ethernet MAC addresses are 6 bytes long and are usually represented as 12 hexadecimal digits. MAC addresses are used in the media access control protocol sublayer of the OSI reference model. A MAC address, or Media Access Control address, is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical network segment. ![]()
